Ecovironment is a pioneering social enterprise in Makeni City, Sierra Leone that harnesses technology to address the twin challenges of plastic pollution and urban sustainability. The project is committed to environmental excellence that is integrated with a business‐wide approach to environmental sustainability. We work with underprivileged youth and women to collect plastic waste and employ cutting-edge, chemical-free plastic extrusion technology to recycle collected plastic waste into durable, eco-friendly bricks and paving tiles that replace conventional construction bricks ideal for outdoor and construction purposes. These construction materials, superior in strength to traditional construction materials, promote sustainable cities and communities by providing resilient building resources.
Taking a step further, we are introducing "Ecozone", a digital application that fosters a circular economy by linking consumers with plastic recyclers and manufacturers. This platform enables real-time plastic waste transactions, making recycling efficient and transparent. This application revolutionises waste management and allows users to transact plastic waste and process payments digitally, creating a tech-driven green economy that is both inclusive and sustainable. Such tech-driven innovations echo the principles of SDG 9, emphasising the importance of technological advancements in driving sustainability.
Our mission is to recycle a million tons of plastic waste by 2030, thereby generating 500 green jobs for underprivileged youth and women and reaching 2 million customers.
Our commitment to environmental sustainability is further demonstrated by a remarkable array of accolades and recognitions. Recently, we won awards, including the 2023 Young Climate Prize (https://shorturl.at/f3456), the 776 Climate Fellowship (https://shorturl.at/hrFM1), and the 2023 UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award (https://shorturl.at/nq579), attesting to our innovation and effectiveness in protecting our planet. Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
We revitalise the industrial sector in Sierra Leone by introducing innovative plastic recycling technology, creating a sustainable production cycle. Our venture facilitates green job creation and promotes resilient infrastructure development through the production of eco-friendly construction bricks and tiles.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Our initiative directly fosters the creation of sustainable urban areas. The affordable and strong construction materials we produce build more resilient communities, reduce reliance on imported materials, and promote local, sustainable industrial development. Moreover, by tackling plastic waste, we are helping to keep urban areas cleaner and more sustainable.
SDG 13: Climate Action
By recycling a significant volume of plastic waste, we actively reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with plastic production and disposal. This concerted action manifests a tangible effort in combating climate change, thereby fostering a healthier environment for present and future generations in Sierra Leone.
SDG 14: Life Below Water
We take a stand against the pollution besieging our oceans. Our comprehensive plastic recycling program aids in reducing the volume of plastic waste that finds its way into the oceans, thereby protecting marine life and ecosystems from the adverse effects of plastic pollution.
Through technological innovation and community engagement, we embody a multipronged approach to achieving these critical UN Sustainable Development Goals, steering Sierra Leone towards a more prosperous and sustainable future.
