"Alternate Speaking" is a groundbreaking initiative that harnesses the power of technology to revolutionize communication for mute individuals, thus contributing to many of the advancement of UN SDGs.
Using Arduino Tech, our project focuses on addressing the long-standing communication barriers faced by mute individuals who use sign language as their primary means of expression. We have developed a sophisticated system that Flex sensors to recognize and interpret sign language gestures in real-time. These gestures are then translated into written text and spoken words through a mobile application, enabling seamless communication between mute individuals and the wider community.
Our project has gone beyond the concept stage, and we have a working prototype that showcases the transformative potential of "Alternate Speaking." The prototype includes sensor-equipped gloves that users wear to make sign language gestures. These gestures are captured and processed by our AI system, allowing the user's intended message to be displayed as text and spoken aloud through the mobile app.
"Alternate Speaking" is a catalyst for reducing inequalities in society by ensuring that mute individuals can actively participate in various aspects of life, from education and employment to social interactions. By eliminating communication barriers, we empower them to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas effectively, ultimately fostering inclusivity and understanding among communities.
"Alternate Speaking" exemplifies how technology can be a force for good, bridging gaps, and promoting equality. We are excited to be part of the Tech 4 Good Awards, showcasing our project's positive impact on society and its alignment with the UN SDGs.
Sustainable Development Goals:
Reduced Inequalities: "Alternate Speaking" actively addresses Goal 10 by breaking down communication barriers faced by mute individuals. By providing them with a means to express themselves effectively through sign language translation, our project promotes inclusivity and equal participation in various aspects of society, such as education, employment, and social interactions.
Good Health and Well-being: Our project indirectly supports Goal 3 by improving the mental and emotional well-being of mute individuals. Effective communication is essential for mental health and well-being, and "Alternate Speaking" empowers them to engage more fully in society, reducing feelings of isolation and enhancing their overall quality of life.
Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: "Alternate Speaking" aligns with Goal 9 by showcasing the potential of innovative technology to address societal challenges. Our use of AI-driven sign language recognition and translation demonstrates the role of technology in improving communication infrastructure and fostering innovation for the benefit of marginalized communities.
